Angels in the Bible
Do Angels
have a role in the Bible?
To
describe the facts about the Bible, is to include a discussion
of angels. Angels perform the role of messengers to us
from God. While, it is true, that the Book of Genesis describes
the fallen angel, Satan, the Garden of Eden is closed by a
Cherub with a flaming sword. It is the
Archangel Gabriel who
announces the conception of Jesus to Our Blessed Mother, now
the Queen of Angels. An Angel tells Joseph that he should
not be afraid to take Mary as his wife, and when he should flee
Herod. And it is angels that minister to Jesus in the
Garden of Eden, while myriads of
Angels minister
to God as recorded in the Book of Revelations, as they do
in every Mass.
What about our Guardian
Angel?
It is in Church tradition,
although not in dogma, that each of us has a guardian angel that is
tasked with ensuring, that after this life, we arrive safely in
Heaven. The Book of Tobit details the acts of the
Archangel Raphael who guards Tobiah.
The feast day of guardian angels is October
2.
This angel is available to us,
as we pray to him to help and protect us. We should not
miss the opportunity to task our angel on a daily
basis, to pray in our
behalf to Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament, to learn
the angel's name, and to protect those whom we are
concerned about.
Unlike the other gifts that we have
been given to us, which can be used for or against God's will,
guardian angels can only be used in conformity with God's
will.
While we can not have the Beatific vision in this
life, and its sure guidance, our guardian angel does
have that vision, and knows God's will for
you.
An example of a task that we can
assign to our Guardian Angel, is to ask him to protect us from
distractions during prayer, and from accidents while
driving, to depend on God's resources, rather than our own,
or to summon saints appropriate for a certain
situation.
