At the
Heart of the Bible
What is the Bible all
about?
The Book of
Genesis describes how Satan tempts Eve to eat of the
fruit of the tree of the knowledge, so Adam and Eve can
become gods. This continues to be man's primordial
temptation; not to be God-like (for which he was created,
but to be
god).
Every
sin that man commits is an attempt to be a god (as described
in the ten commandments), whether it be to disregard the
rights of God, or to disregard the rights of a fellow human
being. This is sin, springing from pride. The
chosen antidote to this act of pride by man trying to be a
god, is an act of humility by God becoming
man.
Thus Cain killing
Abel, the tower of Babel, the behavior of the people before
the flood, David killing Uriah, and Solomon, allowing
strange gods, are man's attempt to be a god. We see
this kind of effort perpetuated to day in theosophy,
Capitalism and communism.
And in Abel's
sacrifice, in Noah, being preserved from the flood, Abraham
offering to sacrifice his son, and Moses leading his people
from the bondage of Egypt, we see God acting through these
people to foreshadow the act of humility by His son in
becoming man. In the Bible we are called to share in
this Divine act of humility, so we can realize the purpose
for which we are created.
